My friend Lee-Anne and I have known each other since we started high school. And at the risk of giving away our ages, that would be approximately 18 years! When we still lived on the farm Lee-Anne was a regular visitor and we went horse riding, walking and skinny dipping with the sun setting over the dam... And if I had to choose a moment in life to go back to for just a day it would be to one of those carefree days when all we worried about was having to be back in the classroom come Monday.
On Friday she and her little girl Gioia are hosting myself and my two girls for our first ever sleep over! I know for a fact that Mackenzie can't wait as she is counting the sleeps and wants to skip one or two so it can be Friday already! And for those of you who would like to follow this interesting evening, please refer to http://gioiabean.blogspot.com.
The topic of this blog is Friends, so who of us mommies have time for friends inbetween all the kids activities and keeping them all clean, happy and wellfed you may ask, and my answer is this.
As young girls we have friends who share all our secrets, who know everything there is to know about us from which boy has taken our fancy to what size bra we wear, but as we get older and become more seriously involved in relationships we tend to lose ourselves in the role of being a girlfriend, a fiancee and eventually a wife and a mother. These friendships tend to take a backseat and we are lucky if we get 5 minutes on the phone before the kids start clamouring for your attention... And then finally we have a playdate and we can have a peaceful chat while the kids play, but these playdates are not the peaceful ones we imagine because invariably a loudly shouted "Mommeeee" brings everyones heads around and you hurry up from your chair to quieten your child in the middle of the really juicy piece of gossip that you were just getting into! So what do we do? We make girlfriend dates, no kids, no husbands and no interruptions because at the end of the day, when your kids make you proud, they are the ones who cheer with you, when your kids get hurt, they are the ones who sympathise with you, when your husband is sick, they are the ones carrying ready made meals to the door so you can concentrate on getting him well, when you have a new baby, they are the ones who will babysit your older kids while you get back into the hang of having a newborn and finally, when you feel like the world is your oyster or its collapsed around you, they are the ones flying high next to you or helping you pick up the pieces...
So encourage your children to make friends and keep those friends, and remind them that we are all different, accept each others differences and build a friendship based on the strength of knowing that you are accepted unconditionally, no matter what you or your children get up to, by the friend right next to you...
